A year afterwards the visible supply had become perfectly normal. What manipulation is connected with the present advance is of a totally different character. There is no cut and dried effort at a corner. Late last year the leading operators began pulling strictly together, but last March one of the largest operators was found to be heavily short for April, and a squeeze resulted. Where it will end no one can say. There is, of course, scarcely any market for tin at the moment, and it will require a continuance of present prices for a little while before the manufacturing industries actually find themselves using such high priced tin. The time will unquestionably come, however, as it is certain that there will be no collapse. Tin will either advance further, or will decline but gradually. The present movement in tin is a continuance of one which began in June, 1904, when tin almost touched 36 cents in New York. Following the boom of 1899-1900, when 33 cents was almost reached, there had been numerous fluctuations, all between 23 and 30 cents. As the consuming trade does not deal with record prices but with averages, the following table of average monthly prices for the past 13 months is given, the averages being those of the daily closing prices for spot Straits tin, 5-ton lots and over: April, 1905 30.62 May 3016 June 3041 July 3178 August 32-97 September 32.16 October 32-55 November 33-50 December, 1905 3585 January, 1906 36-49 February 3648 March 36.64 April 3890 May 14, 1906 49-5 The advance will fall very heavily on the tin plate manufacturers.
